MASTERTON RAM FAIR

THE SECOND DAY. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report:— The annual fixture was brought to a close yesterday, when stud and flock lincolns and South-, downs were offered. The attendance of the public was good, but, contrary to expectations, bidding for both breeds of rams offered was spasmodic, and prices were irregular. It was anticipated that Lincolns and Southdowns would command considerable attention and bring . higher prices, but this was not the case, and the sale all through ,except for really •good rams, lacked animation. At the close of the sale, however, but few' rams were left unsold, vendors facing the market by lowering their reserves. Unfortunately the sale commenced with Flock Lincolns, and! some considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at this, as the catalogue showed that Flock Southdowns would be offered first. The mistake was occasioned by a printer's error,, as in the drawings for. position-:' of'.- sale,} Lincolns cameout.first, and; should) have been •^:.^atalo^ue^:vH<kW.ev<>r r • after the Rani" Fair Coihmitte«v had: ; explained how the mistake had occurred, most', buyers, appeared;,satis-; . fied. The quality of the yarding was again exceptionally good, .and the majority of the rams offered in both classes were good serviceable sheep. \ For Lincolns, bidding was rather I more spirited at the commencement | of the sale than towaids the end, and at the close of the day sales were rather difficult to effect under the hammer,. prices being in favour of •buyers. Southdowns did not sell up to expectations, although , any rams showing quality and condition met with ready sales and sound prices. In our catalogue some really | good sheep of both breeds came out ftir sale, and very satisfactory prices were obtained. In Stud Southdowns, we easily topped the market with a very nice 3-shear ram offered on account of Mr A. J. Stone-Wigg, which sold at 4ogns., Mr Win. Howard j (Booth being the purchaser.
