FALL IN MUTTON.
The announcement made this morning that there has been a fall of a farthing a pound in mutton and lamb, will come as an unwelcome surprise to sheep-growers throughout this district. The cause of the fall is said to be the heavy shipments pouring into the market from New Zealand, Australia and the Argentine. As the season has barely opened, however, this, explanation hardly seems rational. A much more feasible theory is that the buyers at Home, knowing that the seasons have been good and that shipments are likely to be heavier than usual, are deliberately "bearing" the marftet. As things have happened, the closing down of the Wellington and Gear Companies works for a time is likely to prove a distinct gain to the shareholders in those Ccmoanies.
