BOROUGH COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, in the Council Chambers, there being present,— His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Crs. H. J. O'Leary, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T. G.'Hoar, J. C. Ewington, A. Donald, and J. P. Prentice. .Leave of absence; Avas granted to '.'Gcj Pragnell, 3A ca'b-driver came before the Council at the latter's request, in answer to a report of culpable behaviour while" ill-charge of a cab. His Wor*ship the Mayor, on behalf of the Council, reprimanded him, and his license Avas continued on the understanding that in future would behave himself in a more responsible manner.

Cr Temple congratulated the Engineer on the work done,> but- thought that the water-tables should "be tarred.—, .Cr Donald • also thought that - the. streets required improving.— The Mayor indicated that a Fair amount of work would be' done on '■he Borough ,r<3ads at the end of the curent year. K A letter- was - received from the irlanagei'S of Knox ' Church, asking .the Council to do something towards improving Worksop Road, as the noise c-f traffic considerably annoyed :the congregation.— His Worship the .Mayor moved,'and Cr Temple seconded, that the work of improving the street be put in hand as soon as possible. , The Health Officer's ••* was read, and referent" one house in Master! in a habitable state.- ...cided,

on the motion of Cr Temple, seconded .by the Mayor, that the owner of the property be written to with reference to the state of the house. ] . : I . The Council received a letter from' R. Weldou ; a cab proprietor, of Wellington, applying for a temporary license for a driver and landaus, as he intended being in Masterton . during Show week.— It was decided, on the Amotion of Cr Hoar, seconded by Cr Donald, that the application be not granted. i The Council "received two "applications for the .position of caretaker of the Borough reading, room.' On the [ motion of Cr O'Leary, seconded by j;£3r. Ewington, it was decided to apj point Mr .Co.bbe; of Masterton, to the 'position, • ■ - ■ .

A letter was received from the Managers" of"the 1 Masterton Technical School, advising the Council that the election of Board and Managers'of tiie School takes place 011 the 26th: inst., and hoping that members of the Council would be present. The report of the Fire Superintendent was read, and a discussion afterwards followed on the condition of the Foresters' Hall in the event of fire breaking out.—The Mayor moved, and Or Hoar seconded, "That Messrs Ihompson and Payne be advised to put into effect the advice of the Superintendent, to have the operatingroom lined with asbestos, or otherwise made fire-proof, and also to take Vteps to keep the: exits clear." A letter was received from, Wellington to the effect that Paradise ducks for the Park Lake could be procured at £2 per pair. The matter of procuring birds was held over, pending information being received. (Reports from the Manager of the Gasworks, and from the Borough Engineer, were read and appn.-ed. Accounts amounting to ,£2,'V7B 9s 5d were passed for payment.
