Mr T. H. Graves waited upon the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council yesterday and asked for some assistance in the direction of lowering a culvert oil the Mount Baker road,, in order that he might avail himself-of .it for tho purpose of draining his property. A letter from Mr George Benton was read at the Masterton County Council meeting yesterday, drawing attention to the fact that the Te Hoe stream, in the Ailfrecltou district, was 'being polluted by refuse from the flaxmill. The Wellington Garrison Band won the Championship, and also the Challenge Shield aifc the Palmerston North Band Contest of 1911. They used Hawkes' Excelsior Sonorous Band Instruments—a complete set. In the first test piece this noted Wellington Band was allotted the maximum number of points, the judge declaring that lie ha-d never heard such playing, and commending in eulogis-' tic terms the tone and blend. The Wellington Tramway Band, also us ing a complete set of Hawkes' Excelsior Sonorous Instruments, won the B Grade. The judge congratulated this band on their playing. These two successes in Grade A and Orade B, on such a great occasion, are worthy wins for Hawkes', whose instruments are pre-eminent all over the world. Bandsmen! Tho Masterton Borough Council decided at their meeting last night to act on tlhe recommendation of the gas manager, and to have a new station meter erected as soon as possible, as the meter now in use wias very badly corroded. The cost of the new meter, ■together with tho erection of same, is estimated at £250.

By the strange irony of fate, a fireman.' who, exactly one week ago gave at the inquest, on the bodyof a fireman named who died iu a."batch" at Lyttelton, cKed in the same yesterday, states a Chmtchurch Press message. The man's name was Michael Collins, 1 about 56 years of age, and well-known in Lyttelton. He had been ill for a few days, and the doctors had ordered his removal to the Hospital.

The Mr J. Mowlem met with an unfortunate accident on Saturday. Ho had just procured a new wood-cutting plant and started work with it for the first- time, but before he had been, working long his hand slipped against the circular saw while'it was in motion, causing severe lacerations to several fingers.
