Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., left Masterton -for Wellington yesterday afteraioon.

Mr T. G. Mason, who was in Dannevirke for some weeks, is at present in Mastertqn,. He informs ua that Mr W. Mason, who recently met with a. serious motor accident, is progressing favourably towards recovery. The Rev. James Rattray, of Pongaroa, arrived in Masterton yesterday to attend the sitting of the Presbytery.

The death occurred in Nelson last week, aifteor anillnegs extruding over three or four months) of Captain Britt, of Washington Valley. Captain Britt was a very old resident of Nelson. In ■the early days he was in charge of different sailing vessels which were engaged in tEe New Zealand, coasting trade, and he also took part in wha!-> ing excursions. Captain Britt gave up ithe sea some years ago, and had since lived in Washington Valley. Mr Robert Helton Johnston, a very old colonist, died in (Southland last Week, in his eighty-third year. He arrived in Nelson in 1850 from England by the ship Poietiers. At the garden party at Feilding yesterday, Mr D. H. Guthrie, M.P., received an illuminated address and a purse of sovereigns. tMr W. F. Massay, and other M.P.'s were present. Dr. and Mrs W. GET. Hosking, of Masterton, are at present on a visit t» Napier. A Sydney calble states that Father Kelly, a Roman Catholic priest, was drowned while proceeding to celebrate mass, ait Singleton. The accident occurred while Father Kelly was cross- , ing a flooded creek. Mr A. E. Essoa, of the Masterton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, left yesterday for Westport, where Hie is to be stationed for the next few months. "Dolly," aa he was familiarly called, was captain of the Masterton Cricket Club, , The funeral of tli© late Mrs Reading, wife of iMr A. B. -Reading, -of Kopuaranga,took -place yesterday. The cortege was one of the largest that has ever ibeen witnessed in the district, testifying to the high esteem in whioh the deceased lady_ was helld. The burial service, which was conducted by the Rev. J. J. Pentlray, was most impressive. The pall-bearers were: Messrs W. Lett, J. Hope, It. Seorrar, and F. Donovan. The deatfli is announed in the Wellington papers of Miss Lily Dowdeawell a former resident of Morison's Bush —a sister of Miss DowdesweU,, one time head mistress of the Kaatara school, and of Mr Dowdeswell,. former-" ly of Eketahuna, but now of Pa tea. Mr J. Jolly,- of Marti nborough,. and formerly of Masterton, has received, advice that he has been successful in the University Commercial examina_ tdons, in the subjects auditing, and book-keeping. His name was, in error, omitted from the Gazette. A Paris cable announces the death of M. Lauds Delaunay BelviHe, the boiler inventor. A Sydney cable announces the death of Mr William Lyons, a sportsman who previously live in New Zealand.. Professor. O'Kane, the well-known; hymn-writer, is dead. 1 The death of the Rev. D. Andrew Martin Fairbairn, Principal Emeritus' of Mansfield College, Oxford, is announced. A cable from London announces the death of Lord Lister, who was fainour for the discovery of the anti-septic system of treatment in surgery.
