"I have taken no action as 'yet in regard to the 'tramway strike," said the Minister'for Labour to a Post, ireporter yesterday. He added that he had only just returned from his holiday, and that he was going to make a full enquiry at the earliest possible moment.
The next mail despatch for Canada, Central America, United. It will probably come as a surprise to some local ibodies to learn that a big increase lias ibeen made in the rate of interest upon loans to local bodies from the State-Guaranteed Advances Office. Until recently, the rate lias been fixed at £3 10s .per cent, with £1 7s 6d per cent for sinking fund, and 6d per cent for contingencies; a total of £4 18s upon loans extinguished in years. The Department has now raised •the rate of mter«st, iiucluding sinking fund and contingencies, to £o 5s per cent.
Much surprise and not a little indignation Was ibeen expressed in Masterton athletic circles owing to the non-inclusion of Mr R. McKenzio in the Wellington Provincial team, to compete at the Lnvereargill championships. Mr McKenzie won the championship events at Wellington on Saturday, and the Select-ion Committee have passed him over, - in favour J of several others wlio did not d<f nearly so well. The ordinary monthly meeting, of the directors of the Workers' - Mutual Building Society was held last night. Mi' J. Prentice (Vice-Chairman) presided. and Messrs J. C. Ewington, Alf. Gardner, J. W. A notice of withdrawal was received from a shareholder, which wias ordered to be registered. A shareholder who had drawn an appropriation of £3OO wrote, .asking '-the Society to .sell her interest in it as she had no present use for the loan. The Treasurer reported a credit •balance of £SOO in the bank. It was decided to hold a ballot for £3OO free of interest and a sale of £3OO on the 14th March.
