The Wellington Garrison Band won the Championship and also the. Challenge Shield a<t the Palmerston North Band Contest of 1911. They used Hawkes' Excslsior Sonorous Band Instruments—-a complete set. In the first test piece this noted Wellington Band was allotted the maximum number of points, the judge declaring that he had never heard such playing, and commending in eulogistic terms the tone and Wend. A Press Association message from Christc.hurch states that- in the inquest on the victims of the Styx railway crossing accident, the Coroner, Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., returned a verdict of accidental death.
A large number of young men, says a Press Association message, were charged at Christchurch yesterday, with failing to take the oath of alleg iance, as required by the Defence Act. Several were fined 40s, which would be reducible to 5s if the oath were taken within fourteen days.

The forthcoming meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle Association promises to be the most .successful ever held, that is to say, if the inducements offered in the way of prize money and in the variety of events presented can be taken <as an indication of success. A steady rain set in at Masterton yesterday morning, and continued throughout the day. At the time of writing, there was no indication of its ceasing. The rain will have a very appreciable effect upon pastures and stock. Fortunately, nearly the wihola of the harvest is in, and shearing has been completed.
It is not expected that tiho strike at tihe Wellington freezing works will ••affect tSio . Waiiigawa works, further than to keep them exceedingly busy. The employees at" the local works, are not- yet fortmed into a union, but it is reported that an attempt is to be made to induce them to become unionists. In tJie meantime, no apparent dissatisfaction exists at the Waingawa.
