COMMITTEE MEETINC. Tlie monthly meeting of tae' Committee of toie Masterton Borough douncil was held last night, there being present, — His IVlorship the Mayor (Mi - J. M. Coradine), Ors. ADonaldi, J. Prentice, J. C. Ewington, W„ Pragnell, T. G. Hoar, W. Candy, F. Temple, and H. J. Q'Leary s OFFICERS' REPORTS. Tlie reports of the Borough Officers for the month ended December 31st were read as under:— LIBRARY. New books received 23, replaced 9,, total in the library 6020, lent during the month 173-5, number of subscriber® 311, subscriptions received £3 0s 9d. Stock slaughtered.—73 cattle, 9 calves, 349 sheep, 242 lambs, 202 pigs. Aggregate charges for the month £9l 2s 2d. The sex is describe ed as follows: 14 cotts, 34 bullocks, 25 maiden heifers, 181 ewes 1 , 149 wethers, 19 maiden ewes, 242 tamibs.
POUND. Animals impounded: 14 horses; released —14 horses, cattle; total, 15. Impounding fees 14s .driving 17s, sustenance 2«- 6d., total £1- 14*j Amount dispersed Is; airtount paid to treasurer, £1 13s. STREET WORK. Th» cleaning of the drain in Oockiburn Street (has been, completed, and iwo neW culverts have been, pliaced across the roadway to replace those that were found to ,be in. a state pasrtr repairing. Part of Hall Street, j Perry Street and Oliapel Street roadway has had a second coat of tar and! shingle. The approach to the Waipoua bridge has had (a further amount of filling (done to it since tHie bridge was completed to it® present stage. The footpath in front of the mew Trust Buildings has been repaired' and places, in Queen Street have !bteen repaired with asphalt. The boiler bought from the Farmers' Implement Cbmpany has been placed in position, and is nearly ready for use. nUie new spring board (has been placed an position at the Plark Lake, also the one in the ladies' btiths repaired. Tlie work of filling in the fbotpath in (Bannister Sirreet lias been carried on as circumstances will permit. A culvert 3?as been placed in Albert Street for Messrs Ghfeunberlaiu and Son. River metal has been placed on the following:— Cornwall Street, Coliimlba Road, Cole Street, Akura Road and (broken metal on Lincoln Rbad and l Ferry Street. The relaying of tlie sewer in Cole Street is. going on ve:'y well. I have taken up and j-d'aid 11\ chains, and there are at present 4i chains opened up ready for re-Saying the new pipes. I .found on taking up the concrete wipes that they were ulho'le, but very inferior in- quality, .and so soft that they could be scraped through, some of the junctions that had been left for future house connections had been left open, thereby allowing surface water to get into tlie drain. The following materials have been placed on the streets:— River and broken metal 75 yards; asphalt, yards; tar, 700 gallons; sand, S2> yards; and -14 Yards ot stone and wli.inde have .bee.n carted to the Hope Street yard for stock purposes.

The monthly meeting was lielct subsequently, the same Councillors as at .the Committee meeting being pie-s----out. . , The manager of the iSew Zealand Times wrote asking that his paper he 'replaced in the Library, and stating the subscription per annum. ftas as decided to subscribe to the paper. A request for remission of rates was granted. . , A communication was receivec ifrorn the Wellington Harbour in. tfUich it was .stated that the Board had a greed, to make a,n additional payment of £2 10s in connection with the Harbour Board election. The caretaker of the Park was granted a fortnight's leave of alliance, aadjie was / also granted a bwnus of £5. Messrs Barton Bros, wrote an respect ito the payment of £5 as a license fee.— It was resolved tliat the by-law be given effect to, -and that the usuall cdwvrge of £5 be made.
