Mr Frederick William Spiro, of Masterton, was married at the Upper i?kidix yesterday afternoon to Miss Olivo Allen. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, 8.A., B.D. The staff of the Masterton Implement Company recently presented the manager (Mr J. H. Pauling) with a solid silver entree dish, in recognition of the esteem in which he is held. The presentation was made by Mr P. Smith, and was suitably acknowledged. : .The death occurred recently at Wangahui of Mr Thomas Tunics, second son pi/felie late ,Captain Thomas Tanks, of IVuranga. .The kite Mr Tunks arrived from England in the early days, after having spent some years in India and oilier military stations with his father, and as a young man was engaged in surveying. On tihe outbreak of hostilities with the Natives he with others volunteered for military service and took part in the Maori War as a mounted trooper, occasionally performing the task . of carrying despatches through hostile country. Subsequently ho was stationed for some time with a party of armed constabulary at Waikaremoana,.on the borders of the Urewera Country, which was the stronghold of Te Kooti and of. the Hauhaus. After the cessation of hostilities Mr Tunks acquired large landed interests in the Hawke's Bay district and engaged in j&eep farming. Mr G. L'. Petersen, representative of WirtJis.' Circus, wias in' Masterton yesterday malting- arrangements for the appearance of the circus in this town on January 2oth.

Nicol, a wellknown resident of Southland. , Mr. Nicol, who was born in 1845, caine to New Zealand by the Strathmore, he being then 11 .years of age. Ho was an enthusiastic Oddfellow, and was noted for his musical ability. . Mr Miacluro, Commissioner .of Crown Lands in. Westland, has. been transferred to Southland. _ It is understood that Mr. Hasard, chief draughtsman in the Christohurch office, will fill tivj vaouncy in Westland, and that Mr Thompson,' chief draughtsman in Westland, will succeed Mr. Hasard m Ghristchurch.

Mr. George Cruicksfhank, who died recently at Shag Valley, Otago, at the age of -74 years, came to New Zealand from Australia in 1863, and after working at the Dunstan diggings, setat Shag Valley. In 1881 lie was appointed road engineer for the Waiheinq County, and retained that position 'till April, 1910. His daughters (the'eldest being twins) are: Dr Margaret" Cruicksliank, of Waimate, and Miss Christina Cruickshank, principal of Wanganui College, whose educational careers were remarkable; Mrs Philips, wife of l>r Philips, of Ivumara; Mrs John Steel, Ngapara; and Sister Isabel Cruicksbank, late of Dunedin Hospital staff. Mr John Lnwiy, well known in Featherston, died in tlie Wellington Hospital on Tuesday night, at the age of 67 years. Ho was a brother of tlie late Mr Thou. Lawry, who died in Fea'therston about >a year ago. He was "a native of Cornwall, and had been mining in Australia and New Zealand before settling down in Featherston. At Woodvffle yesterday, Mr H. Miller was united in wedlock with Miss Rolfe.

Mr J. I). Henry, who arrives in Auckland next week, will probably visit Maste.rton again at an early date in connection with tJio local oil-bearing areas.

Mrs John Vile, senr., of Palhiatua. who is over 95 years' of age, is spending a. holiday in Wellington. The aged lady is still hale and hearty. The condition of the Mayor of Pahiatua (Mr W. W. McCardle) shows satisfactory improvement, and Ins medical advisors are very satisfied with bis progress.

J. and Miss Maclaverty. by tho fjci.rlfi and boys of St. Andrew's Church. Mr- C. F. MoAUum, on behalf of tho sir Is, presented Miss Maclaverty with a silver thimblo in a case, and My Maclaverty with a silver-mounted cigar holder. In making the presentation, Mr MrAllum commented on the great interest both tlio recipients took in the young peoplo of tho church. Mastei B. Thomas, on behalf of the boys, presented Mr Maclaverty with a silvermounted cigarette case, with mon igivam on front, and the following ■ inscription inside: "Presented to Mr Maclave.rty, hy the boys of St. Andrew's Ohuroh, Mnrtinborough."
