Mr H. D. M. Haszard, F.R.G.S., Chief Draughtsman for the Canterbury Land District, has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and /-f Chief Surveyor for tho Westland Dis-vjpt-rict. N Mr C. A. C. Hardy, the defeated Opposition Whip, is to be entertained bv the Selwyn electors this month, and presented with a testimonial. Mr Massey and other leading members of tihe Reform Party are expected to be present. Mr A. L. Herdimn, M.P., w(ho has been spending a few days at Castlepoint, passed through Masterton yesterday on his return to Wellington, .wfliere he is appearing in t'he tramway case before tihe City Council. Mr Arthur C. Major, of Hastings, is at present a visitor to Masterton. The death occurred at Palmers ton Y- North on Monday of Mr Thomas Rowling, an old settler of the district, at tflie ago of sixty. The deceased was the son of one of the pioneers of the Nelson district.
