Several crops have been sown close on a. fortnight, and have not had a drop of moisture yet; so it is to be hoped that a welcome •slhoweir will come before long. Mr P. Morten sen's fine sevenroomed residence is now completed, and is a great improvement to the settlement. The builders were Messrs 1 etersen and Son. Mr W. Petersen has secured a contract for the erection of a hall at Jhuraua. Valley.
CARTERTON
The local Bi 'ass Band enlivened the town on Saturday niglit witli a programime of nut,sic. Thu privileges for the W'airarapa P and A. Society's l slvow were put lip to auction on Saturday, Mr C. G. White, of the Club Hotel, Greytown., purchasing the publican's booth at £3J 10s. Mrs A. L. Whyite, Carterton, secured tlie luncheon booth at £5, and Mr N. Bouzaid the fruit and fancy stall for £4.
, Mr and Mrs R. Bailey, of Taratalu, who ,are leaving the ditsriot were entertained by the congregation of St. Andrew'is. Church on . Friday evening, and presented with a handsomely bound Bible and Hymnal as I tokens of, esteem. The Rev. L. Tbomlpson made the presentation on behalf of the cougfegatiqn. ~ JV>ur tenders were received for the erection of a band rotunda on Oarrii gton Park as a Coronation ine-. mento, that of Messrs Rose and Mason, of Masiterton, at £l9® 10s being accepted. The unsuccessful tenderers were Messrs T. S. Arcus and Sons, £310; D. T. King, £330: A. | R. Wallis, £333. A meeting of delegates represent-' I ing t'he M'asterton and Carterton Friendly Societies' Council, was held here on Friday evening, Bro. H. H. Armstrong presiding. As the Taratali! races aire to be held on Boxing Day, it was considered inadvisable tot clash, and it wlas suggested tihat the .picnic be held on some Thursday during January. The Lodges are to be communicated with, and a further meeting 'wui be held in about tlnree weeks' time to deal with the replies. It- ,was thiougfht advisable to hold the picnic closer to the district this year, and Sol way-was "mentioned; •as a suitable place. Mr 'Ralph H. Armstrong, of Carterton, hias been appointed returning officer for the electoral district erf Wairarapa.
