SMOKE CONCERTS, ETC.
In anotheir portion of this issue, Mr J.. W. Card, solicitor, of Featherston, says it as' illegal, under section 37 of the Act of 1910, ,to have liquor at any (banquet or smoke concert in a (Nio-license area, and 1 he quotes tlllle decision of .the Stipendiary Magistrate in a particular case in which a <man had ordered a supply of liquor for an oyster snipper. With due deference to the opinion of Mr Card, we maintain that the case- he quotes as not a parallel one. We will gB further, and challenge Mr Card jjd jpirove that iti is illegal to have liquor "at any banquet or smoke concert in a No-license district." We wall contribute £5 to the fund® of the Crireyftowin Hospital if Mr Card can procure the opinion of the* Law Officer of the Crown in support of such a contention, on condition that Jse contributes a 6i.mi.lar sum should the opinion he against Man. This is quite a fair offer, made an the very best- of .spirit, and without prejudice. The challenge is open to Mr Card, or any of his friends., fior a period of ten days from. date. Meanwhile, we repeat that the statement appearing in advertisements in certain Uowier Valley papers, is (absolutely .contrary SEo" fact, and evidence is almloSfc daily forthcoming in the .Mastcr.ton No-license 'district it? sup-port I of t-l'.ir. Trtention. "
