The dieath, of Mr Henry Burling, senr., tho weJlnkuown centenarian settler, one of the most remarkable careers/ which have been associated with the colonization) of this .Dominion,, fbe late Mr Burling, with his family, came to. the Wairarapa in the very, early days,.,and endured ail £he hardships and privations attendant upon the work of the pioneer. In those days .the ihuish-clad valley® were unroadied and the' rivers ujibridged, and Mr Burling and hliis family led a strenuous existence. Long after he had passed what Was considered ifche allotted span, the late centenarian engaged in active farming pursuits, andr remarkable tales are told of the vitality he displayed until he had 'well-nigh reached the century. When tine history of the Wairarapa icomes to be ■written, the name of Henry Burling, centenarian, will occupy an honoured position.
