DISTRICT NEWS

(From Oar Own Correspondents.^

MAURICEVILLE WEST.

The weather of the last week lias been perfect—sunny days, with warm nights l following. Spring really seems to have, set in.

The long night dance held in connection with the dancing class on Wednesday night turned out a. decided success, there being about 20 couples present. Messrs M. Nielen and F. Legath acted as M.C.'s. Mr Myersi presided at the piano, and provided, excellent music.

A spider of unusual size, colour, and shape was discovered by a settler last week, under some rotten wood, on the. slopes of Mount Bruce. The spider had a scarlet head and legsi, and black body about one inch in length. On being disturbed with a piece of stick it jumped about three inches at it, and bit so fiercely that small pieces! were taken off the etick with itsi jaws'. It was thought by the settler, who< had, never before seen one of its kind, that had it bitten, the humani flesh, poisoning would follow.

The guide post which I mentioned some, months back as being "stripped of its guiding point's has not yet received any attention from the County Council, and the four miles over the West Hill is almost daily made by persons who mistake the roads.

Lambing is. general now, and considering the shortage of feed, the ewes seem fairly strong.
