BALLANCE DAIRY COMPANY.

J THE ANNUAL REPORT. ■. The Annual Report of the Ballance ' Co-operative Dairy Company is as / follows: —The Directors hove pleasure J to present to shareholders their six- | teenth annual report and balanceI sheet, and congratulate them on a, prosperous season, taking into consideration the dryness of the latter half of the period. Considering past experiences, the Directors thought it advisable to ship the output Home on open consignment, and sent the butter through two different firms as in the previous season. Contrary to expectations, the Home market has riot heel maintained at the high level of last year, owing principally to the greatly _ increased importations from Australia and Siberia and large quantities held in cool stores. The output has just equalled that of last year; whieh is vei-y satisfactory wh'n \the falling away of supply since J.-nuaVy, owing to drought, is considered. As in past seasons, our butter har traded well for export, hut.we regret that reports from Hie Home en'dlfavo been in several instances that the butter; has not opened up so well as might have been expected from -the grading reports. As usual, .more is heard of these sort of complaints en a falling market than in years when better prices prevail. It is greatly to be desired in the interests of the industry that the Department of A-griculture will endeavour to discover the reason of the falling away in quality of butters that grade high at time' of shipment: Advances have been made on butter-fat supplied at Is for June, lid for May, July, and August, 10-Jd for September and October, and lOd November to April inclusive. The surplus of £llO9 your Directors propose to allocate as follows:—To pay a dividend of 6 per cent on paid-up capital, and write tlhe balance off for depreciation. During the season several newjjeparators 'have been installed, ana automatic weighing machines have been placed in the creameries. Various other additions to plant and alterations to buildings have been effected during the season, a large portion of which expense has been charged to upkeep, and accounts for our increased maintenance bill. Indications for the coming season aro that there will be a good demand for butter; stocks are practically cleared, and the lower range of prices last season has brought butter into greater public request. Messrs H. Croad and J. Matthews retire from the Directorate by rotation, and, being eligible, offer themselves for re-election.
