Mr M. Cohen, a well-known citizen of Palmerston North, is at present .">j a visit to Masterton.
Mr L. M. Isitt, the now member for Christchurch North, will probably be sworn in by the Speaker to-morrow.
Mr Henry A. Harrison, an old identity of Wanganui, and a prominent member of the Salvation Army, passed away on Friday last.
The death occurred in Hawera on Thursday of an old and respected settler in the person of Mr James Cowper, who had been ill for ; ome time. In.the early daysithe lato Mr Cowper fought in many of the skirmishes with tihe Maoris and was one of the band of military settlers who received a block of land from tho Government for sevvicos rendered.'
Mr David Anderson, the head of tho well-known firm of Anderson and Son, coachbuilders, Dannevirke, died on Wednesday evening, aged 80 years. The death is announced by cable of Lord James of Hereford, one of England's foremost peers. ■ ■ Mr W, D. Lysnar, Mayor of Gisborne, has intimated his intention of resigning the Mayoralty' upon medical advice.—Press Association.
The impression in Sydney is that if the Australian Oardinalate is continued Archbishop Carr, of Melbourne, will succeed Cardinal Moran, he being senior to Archbishop Kelly.
The name of Bishop Frodsham, of Queensland North, is prominently mentioned in connection with the vacant Bathurst See. Bishop Frodsham has intimated that he is unlikely to accept.—Cabled item. Mr Norman Dorset has been transferred from the Hastings branch of the Bank of New South Wales to the Masterton branch of tho Bank.

At a meeting of the Directors of the Wairanapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last, it was decided to write Mr John Montgomery, expressing the sympathy of the Society in the recent sad loss of his daughter. The friends of Mr C. A. Pqulsen, who has been an inmate of the Masterton Hospital for some weeks, will be pleased to learn that he is improving rapidly. Mr Poulsen was able to leave his bed for the first time yesterday..
I' Mr P. Keegan, a farmery of Whalca* tarrie, has been .selected as the Goverhment candidate to contest the ' Tauranga seat against Mr Herries. I Mr Robert Flaus, an old resident nl Invercargill, is dead. Ho was born in the parish of Dunrossness in 1827. Mr William- Frame, an old settler of North Otago, died at Otepopo last week, at the ago of 71 years. He had resided at Otepopo for 43 years. . A cablegram received from Rome last night stated that His Holiness the Pope was convalescent. The remains of the late Mr William Bennett were interred in the Masterton cemetery yesterday. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. Mr Hampton. The funeral of the late Mrs J. Winteringham took place yesterday afternoon. A largo number of friends and relatives of the deceased lady joined in the cortege, and an impressive burial service was conducted hy the Rev. Mr Hampton.
