NIREAHA.
Advantage is being taken of the fine weather, and ploughing operations are well in hand. Every year sees more stumping done, and consequently a larger area under the plough. In a few years dairy farmers should be in a position to provide better winter and summer feed for their stock; for hitherto, though they strongly realise the necessity of doing so, the area under cultivation was. not great enough to improve the position. The Government Agriculturist visited Nireaha on Friday, and selected a plot on Mr Davidson's property for the purpose of trying what- crops would suit best the climate and soil of this district. He strongly advocated lucerne as a. , fodder for cows, and attributed the apparent failure of this' crop in the Bush Districts to the ground not having been first properly worked and cleaned. He suggested that a crop, say, of peas., should first 'be grown, and then; the following spring to lay down in lucerne. It is reported that Mi- G. R. Syikes intends shortly to visit this district, smd make a house to house canvass in order to further his interests.' 'A most enjoyable social and dance was held in. the Hall oil Thursday, in aid "of the- Vicarage Fund. Miss Fletcher, and. Messrs Calton, Parker and Stirling kindly, came from Eketahuna to help with the. singing, Miss Woanwright and Mr Watts also contributing >songs, and Mr Ireland a humorous recitation. ■On Saturday, the anmual prizegiving in connection with St. Mary's Sunday School was held. About 50 children and their parents' assembled in the hall, when the Rev. H. A. Walker distributed the prizes. The opportunity was then taken to present .to the 'Superintendent (Mr B. J. Mason) who has resigned his position, owing to his early departure for Sydney, with a. gold pendant, suiitably anscribed, as a mark of esteem from his scholars. The presentation was made by Miss Bolla Daysh, who also; read a neat speech expressing the children's sorrow at his departure.
