SETTLERS AND THE FREEHOLD.

EXCITEMENT IN THE ASSEMBLY

SYDNEY, July 25

The Hon. G. Wade, in the Legislative Assembly, moved his censure motion, of which he had given notice, as follows: —

That the declared policy of the Government that in the pmposeil repeal of the Conversion Act they will not preserve in their entirety the rights of all those persons now entitled to convert their holdings, thereby repudiating a statutory contract; that the further obstacles placed in the way of intending occupants of Crown lands who may be desirous of acquiring the freehold; '/hat the furthor discontinuance of resumptions under the Closer Settlement Acts; and thai the proposal to deprive workers of the right to seouire freeholds Iv » connection with their homes tend to embarrass persons engaged in rural pursuits and discourage law' settlement, and are inimical to the best interests of the State.

The debate is proceeding. Great excitement was caused by two labour members (Mr Dunne, of Mudnr%l. and Mr Home, of Liverpool Plains) handing in their resignations. Thev said they were unable to support the Government's policy. This means that if the independent party vote with the Opposition the Government will suffer defeat:
