THE MYSTERIOUS TRAGEDY.
SHOT DEAD IN THE STREET. TWO MEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Received Last Night, 9.15 o'clock.) SYDNEY, July 25. The Iwo men Smp,th and Jones have bean committed for trial on'-* charge of murdering Michael Daley at Newcastle on the 17th ins*. The evidence showed tliat the men were drinjkiiig together when arrested. ' ' ; - .■'■'.• : - Smiiib told the police that Daley shot himself; At tie inquest to-day, Smith stated that he. was trying to open a revolver,, when it went off, and ishot Daley.
(A recent cable from Sydney was as follows: "A mysterious tragedy is reported to have occurred in Scott Street, Newcastle, when, a man nam*>d diaries McGuire. alia* Michael Daley,' was shot dead in broad daylight. Nobody is known, to have witnessed the ocourVence. Thomas Jones and George Smith, who, were standiiM? near by, have been arrested on a charge of' vagrancy., Another man, -rwner of the revolver from which tihe shot /'a,'? fired.
