A RIGHT COURSE.

The Masterton Chamber of Commerce has pursued a right course in rejecting the proposal of the Dannevirke Chamber for an amendment of the Bankruptcy Act, providing that creditors may appoint private assignees in cases of bankruptcy. The administration of the Bankruptcy Act may not <be all that could,.be desired in certain districts. This is more the fault of the officials than "f ihe Act itself. If incompetent persons are appointed to fill the position of Official Assignee, the Government alone is to Iblame. To vest the power of appointing Assign cs m , the hands of the oroditOrs themselves l , would be to open the door very wide to acts| of corruption, and would tend to encourage reckless trading, in the hope tlfat the whitewash, brush might be applied by a sympathetic private assignw.
