THE MASTERTON COMPETITIONS.

CLOSING DEMONSTRATION.

The Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society was well rewarded for its splendid festival week bv a crowded house lart night, when the closing demonstration was held. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M.-Goradine) presided, and during an interval presented the prizes to the successful competitors. The Mayor' delivered a- short speech, in. which he thanked those who had •contributed to the success of the festival, and "stated that but for the generous assistance of the local newsnapers the competitions would not have been the success they were. The excellent programme, as published in yesterday's Age, was enthusiastically received by the audiencOj whose applause demonstrated their- appreciation of ,the whole festival. An American monologue cbntrihuitied by Mr O. N. Baeyertz, the elocutionary judge, created roars of laughter. The item was a very popular one, and Mr Baeyertz was loudly applauded until he was compelled to contribute another piece. The lengthy programme was well received, and the concert was altogether a pronounced, success. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Montague, of Wellington, who" throughout the competitions has played practically all the accompaniments in an artistic and cultured manner.
