THE BUTTER MARKET.

A-N J.N AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The scarcity of butter," which has resulted in a considerable advance in price on the local market recently, is becoming more sitringent. The supply not being equal to the demand, butter merchants to-day notified a further advance of Id per lb for butter in pound pats, making the present price Is 3Jd per lb wholesale. Although .abnormal rates are now being paid to farmers' for such small supplies of butter-fat as are obtainable, the heavy cost of production leaves little margin, even on .present prices. The drought of the autumn is approximated to have caused a loss of £350,000.

TO GO UP IN DUNEDIN. DTJNEDIN, Last Night. To-morrow itihe Taieri and Peninsula Dairy Company will increase- the price of its butter (wholesale) by 2d per lb for fresh made prints (•subject to discount for cash), and 16Jd per lb for bulk. This price is the highest that has obtained in Dunedih Tor 12 year®.

PETITION FOR HIS RELEASE

WELLINGTON, Last Night. As fresh requests for copies of the petition for the release of Lionel Terry are still arriving, the promoter, Mr J. L. Kelly, of AsbbuTton, has decided .to extend the time for returning them until the end of the month, instead of the 15th. Mr Kelly states that the petition is being largely signed, more especially in the South Island. Three sheets have been) returned from Dunedin, with 400 names attached. Ten other sheets are in circulation there. Most of tflbe .sheets lying at newspaper offices all over the Dominion signed without solicitation, but a few voluntary workers are .canvassm? Dunedin. RAILWAY OFFICERS' EXECUTIVE. ' DUNEDIN, Last Night. The Executive Council of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute has been meeting in Dtmedin this week, and expect to conclude their deliberations to-morrow evening. Matters of importance affecting the clerical division of the Service have been comprehensively discussed and dealt with. The proceedings havo not been open to the Press. FAILING TO REGISTER. WELLINv,_ON, Last Night. Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., today, William Oooley pleaded guilty to failing to register as a Territorial under the Defence Act of 1909. SubInspector Sheehan stated that accused was the ringleader of half a dozen lads at tihe Hutfc, who had given the Department a great deal of trouble. Accused had,only registered that morning. xne authorities wished it known that if these youths did not register the Department would ask for the' heaviest penalty the Court could impose. Accused was convicted and ordered to pay the Court costs, seven shillings, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. • Twenty-four hours were given in which to pay the fine.

Joseph' Nathan and Co., of Palmerston North', to-day received an order for two tons of their "CHaxo'.' dried milk from Dr. Mawson for his Antarctic expedition, similar to that which Sir Ernest Shackleton used and thought so highly of. The firm makes this new product at Bunnythorpe, close to here, and Dr. Mawson wrote that it with pemmican, will be the sole dependence of the expedition on the final dash for the pole, and that no other form of milk will be taken on board. The milk has to meet Dr. Mawson's ship at Hobart in Novemand the manufacture will be at once* undertaken. The milk of specially high fat content is being used, so as to generate warmth in the consumers.
