CRAMMING OF CHILDREN.
The judge of the essays at the Masterton Competitions—Mr C. N. Baeyertz—has expressed the fear that the cramming of school children, with facts has the effect of killing any little originality that they may have inherited. Mi* Baeyertz is possibly not aware that the "cramming" of children .with facts is studiously avoided ini the primary aohools of today; that the syllabus ds ispecially designed to develop the originality in children,; and that by Nature study and other methods it is sought to quicken the observation, and imagination of the pupils. The essays placed before Mr Baeyertz may not have excited. his admiration! for the school systtm of New Zealand. Possibly, however, they .were not fair samples of what the average boy and girl cant do.
