Giving evidenco before the Shortage of Labour Commission, representatives of several tailoring firms stated that then- trade was seriously ham- ' pered owing to the scarcity of hands. J Much business had to be refused in consequence. One witness said that in recent years there had been a large increase in general prosperity. People were wearing better clothes. Since the introduction of Federation and the imposition of duties, industries*had made great strides. New industries were I rapidly springing up even with the "largely-increased labour shortage. There was no fear of over-production for the next ten years.
