There is much comimeiit regarding the non-attendance of any »of the Federal Ministers at Lord Dudley's Coronation Levee. This has caused a revival of, the rumour that there is friction 'between Lord Dudley and the Ministry. Mr W. M. Hughes (acting-Prime Minister) excused himself on the score of 'illness. ..Other Ministers disclaim any intention of discourtesy. It 'has been stated on behalf of 'each that he took it for granted that his colleagues would be present. None attended merely because urgent official business required their attention. WHITE ?*AN MURDERED. IN THE NEW HEBRIDES. (Received June 24, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 24. ~ The island steamier 'brings news of the murder by natives of a trader named Alexander Jan»3n, on South Santo Island. Jansen was shot while trying to secure a (native wo- ! man empolyee, who had run away. There are enormous demands from abroad'for the coming New Hebrides ■stamps. It is expected that 'there will ibe sufficient revenue therefrom to cover the cost of both the British and French administrations, without 1 any subsidies,. I RURAL WORKERS. DEMAND FOR HIGHER WAGES. (Received June 24, 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 24. At a conference representative of the dairying industry, the speakers, declared that the. wages • demanded by the, Rural Workers' Union could not he paid, a.»d leave any profit. Increases would mean a decided check to industry. A .solution. ; suggested was • the recording -of individual results of a herd; by which means dairymeni would soon more than double the return per cow. If this were accomplished the demand for (increased wages need aiot cause worry. The conference appointed a committee to enquire regarding the demands, and submit a report. , A disousision took place on ithe admitted marked deterioration on the ricliness of the New South Wales milk isupply in recent years. It was claimed that as a result dairymen were giving all their attention to producing quantity, without any regard to quality. AMERICAN TARIFF MEASURES. RETURNED TO COMMITTEE. The United States Senate's Financial Committee refused to consider as ordered, i&e Woollen, Bill and the 'i' Free List, Bill,, and re-:; turned them to the .committee; The Senate will, take, the-\same. chances on the Canadian -.Reciprocity j Bill. The Committee reported r on both adversely. j It is now conceded that the path j of Reciprocity is more difficult than I ever. The RepubJioams do not desire to accept Democratic Bills. There is ( strong objection, to the Wool Bill particularly. The Democrats will probaibly offer the Wool Bill as an amendment to <the Reciprocity Bill. V A batter tight is expected. FIREMEN'S REVOLT, BETTER EQUIPMENT WANTED. (Received June 24, 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 24. Members of country fire brigades theraten. to strike in a body, as & protest against the want of proper eqiiipmient, and the non-payment of remuneration. Numbers, have already 1 resigned. The secretary of the Fire Brigades Board declares that an more than fifty peroentum of the country town® the brigades, with, present appliances, are absolutely unable to cope with, any serious emergency. The present .situation is a menace to life and property. There is a pressing need for the Government to take over and place the (brigades on a proper footing.
