AN AWKWARD POSITION.

FOR THE RANGITIKEI CLUB. PALMERSTON N,, Last Jfighfc. The Rangitakei Raciavg Olub held a special meeting at Bulls to-day, to consider tie situation which has ' arisen out of tihe recommendation ilia* its days of racing be given to the Marton Club, with wibich it is recommended to amalgamate. The position is that the Club paid fully £5 per acre for one hundred acres at Bulls, and recently carried out considerable improvements." It owes £2550 on a mortgage of £6507, which .must be paid by August,' 1912. It has- also an overdi-aft of £2OO. Tihe land would not fetch anything like its coat cost for farming purposes, and it cannot sell otherwise than, subject to a lease of seven, years to a number of grazing rights at £SO per annum, while its amnual interest hill is £145. As the Olub was the oldest in these parts, -and tihe fourteenth oldest in. New Zealand, it considers it should be allowed, to race till it can meet its liabilities. While the Commis-siojiea-s have suggested that wherever there is a surplus from clubs winding up, it should be given to ihe. Hospital, or the Olub with wMchSt is bidden to amalgamate, no provision ap- ~ pears to have been made whore there is a. liability, that tihe other club should take- this over with the valuable privilege of extra days and monopoly. The Ramgitiked Club resolved tp ask the Minister to receive a deputation to explain its position, and to see- if it is not possible for the Olub to race until it is clear of financial responsibility.
