THE CARETAKER'S RESIDENCE.

IN THE MASTERTON PARK.

NEW BUILDING TO BE ERECTED.

At last night's meeting cf the Master ton Borough Council, a letter wa<s received from the secretary of the Fifth Ruahine Battalion Ban'!, stating that the Band did not agree to- forfeit their interest in the t<>a kiosk for £2O, and hoping that the Council would not- press the matter.

The Mayor stated that he had hoped to be able to convert the building into a caretaker's residence. He thought it could be done for £l5O or £2OO.

Cr Ewington moved that tlie building be removed to a site to be approved of, with a view to fitting It up as a. residence. Cr Temple seconded the motion. Or Hoar objected to the motion, stating that it would be a better investment to erect a cottage. Cr Elliott said that the building had been very useful as a cloak room on sports days, and he thought it was too- convenient to do away with. Cr Pragnell moved as ail amendment that a new cottage foe built at a cost, of about £3OO.

Cr Hoar seconded the amendment.

Or Candy also agreed that the tea kiosk- should remain intact.

Or Elliott said he thought the matter ought to stand over for the present. He added that the Council had once made an arrangement to pay £lO a year to the Band, and through letting them use the kiosk that £lO a year was saved.

Or Ewington said he thought Cr Elliott was wrong in his contention albout the paying of £lO a year to the Band.

Cr Elliott said he might possibly be wrong. Or O'Leary agreed to the amendment.

The Mayor said he thought a saving of £IOO could be effected by converting the kiosk into a cottage. The amendment, on being put to the meeting was carried, Cr,s Temple, Ewington, and Prentice dissenting.

Cr Hoar moved thai the new cottage be erected on the right hand side of .the main gate going into the Park.

Or O'Leary seconded the motion.

Or Ewington moved an amendment that the Council inspect the site before fixing a site.

Several Councillors held that it could not be doubted that the site suggested was the best. The amendment, which was seconded by Or Temple, was lost, and the motion was carried. The Town Clerk was instructed to engage Mr Varnham to prepare plans for a cottage.
