RECIPROCITY AGREEMENT

(Received June 3, a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 2. A crisis has developed in the United States Senate. A fight on the Reciprocity question is expected, when a Free List Bill ma? be offered as an amendment to Reciprocity, with the object of embarrassing the Democrats. President Taft is using his influence with the Republicans in the hope of being able to avoid the offering of an amendment which would likely wreck the Bill. Daily conferences are being held at the White House. Mr Taft is confidI ent the Senate will pass the Reciprocity Bill if amendments are not offered. I Democratic Senators are ready to .reject a Free List Bill amendment if J certain Republicans undertake not to stifle the Free List Bill in its committee stage, thus preventing the Democrats from recording a straight vote for a free list for meats, flour, and agricultural implements. But Canada would not agree if the United !* States now free-list these commodities. J The "all favoured nation" provision ( would benefit A rgentine meats, and Australian mutton would be allowed to enter, to the consequent injury of the American farmer.
