CALEDONIAN PIPE BAND.
THE FIRST PRACTICE.
The first practice of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society's Pipe Band was held in the Dominion Hall, Masterton last night, Mr J. H. Pauling (chairman of the Pipe Band Committee) introduced Mr William Pearson, the ripe Major, and explained that tflie Society member of the Band to give prompt and. •cheerful obedience to the Pipe Major, i who- was the responsible officer of the* Band, and in his absence to the Sergeant (Mr Walter Sutherland). They ••further expected every member to "use his "best endeavours to further the objects of the Band, and to promote the welfare of the Society generally. Owing to the generosity of Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., they were in the enviable position of being able to start off from "scratch" without having to appeal to the public for funds, and it was therefore the duty of every individual meifiiber to |lfow thedr appreciation of the public spirit; which prompted Mr Buchanan to make the offer by making the Band the Premier one of /its kind in the Dominion, and a credit to themselves and to all •. concerned
Mr Pearson, who was received with applause, endorsed all the remarks of the chairman, and said that the magnificent generasity and public-spirit-edness of Mr Buchanan compelled them to use every endeavour to show their appreciation. He congratulated those' present upon their 'splendid physique and the enthusiasm exhibited, and predicted that with constant and diligent practice they would soon be able to enter any contest with confidence that they could give a credita'We account of themselves.
. It was arranged to have the practices ,on Mondays and Thursdays, commencing at 7.30 p.m. sharp. The first practice was concluded at 10.30 p.m., and if the same enthusiasm is maintained the predictions of the ohairman and, Pipe Major will be more than realised.
