PONGAROA RAILWAY.
A report has been circulated: throughout the Dominion that the Masterton Chamber of Commerce has abandoned the Pongaroa railway project in favour-of thei ■Rimutaka deviation. This is entirely erroneous. The Chamber is concentrating its emergies in urging upon Parliament and the constituencies the national importance of the Rimutaka deviation. It still recognises, however, the enormous advantage which would accrue to the Dominion by tlie opening up of the large area of country between Masterton and Dannevirke, and does not accept the statement of the Minister of Works that settlement must precede the railways as binding upon Parliament. When the proper time comes, the urgency of this work will again be represented to the Government. Meanwhile, one of the strongest reasons tfhat could be adduced for the deviation of the Rimutaka is that the change would provide for the increased traffic which is bound to follow the opening up by railway of the East Coast districts generally.
