"SMOODGING."
A word has been coined in New Zealand in recent years which, though not altogether poetical, is certainly expressive. It is known as "ismoodging." To "smoodge" is to endeavour to curry favour by airtifice, sch'einiing, hypocrisy, cunning. Thus it happens that Sir Joseph Ward is just now playing the part of the "smoodger" in London. At a banquet this week, he invited the whole of the British Cabinet to come to. 1 New Zealand in the recess. What a I regal time they would have! New Zealand would show them just how things "ought" to be done, and would be able to give ocular demonstration of the humane efforts of the legislation wfoieh has been attracting so many millions to our shores.
Loss, yes! And how things would hum! And Sir Joseph talked of the "inexpressible pleasure" New Zealand! would again have of entertaining Lord Kitchener at the modest fee of about £30,000! There is no doubt about, it. Sir Joseph is '"smoodging."
