SHOCKING FATALITIES.

man fatally 11wured. at Wasterton railway station. A shocking accident occurred at the Masterton railway station at about 10.15 o'clock on Saturday night. Mr John Montgomerie, a well-known and popular memlfoer, of the railway staff, was engaged in, shunting operations. A carriage was being "kicked" on to a side line, and Mr Mtontgoimerie had jumped between the coxa to uncouple them. By some means or other hits foot slipped, and he got underneath the ear. He made an effort tp extricate himself, but in doing so the wheels iof the carriage attached to the engine pased over his right arm, crushing it to a pulp. Driver Flaws/, noticing that something had hapened, pulled the train up immediately, and ran to ttho rescue of Ms companion. The injured man Was attended by Dr Cowie, and removed to the Hospital, where the arm was amputated. The shock was so severe, however,. that the .poor fellow never rallied, and he passed away about five o'clock on Sunday morning. The deceased, who was about thirty-five years of age, was married, and leaves a widow and little-child. These will have the syimipathy of a large circle of friends in their sad bereavement. The late Mr Montgomerie liad resided for two or three yeaa's in Masterton, and was a general favourite among the rail-' way employees. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Druids. An inquest will be held to-day by Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, District, Coroner. The. remains of the deceased are to be. interred at Greytown to-mor-row.

MAN KILLED NEAR LOWER HUTT. Another shocking fatality occurred on the rkie between the Lower Hutt and MelliKg's bridge on Saturday miorning. A man named George Denis Croiidn, a coachibuilder, of Petone, was sun over by an early morning train from the Upper Hutt, and his body was literally cut to pieces. He was a widower, about forty-eigjfcnt years of age, and had been Hviag at the Empire Hotel in Petojie. FATALITY AT CHRISTCHURCH. A Press Association telegram from GhristchuTicb states that a man named John Hill, aged sixty-,two, who resided .with his son at Sockburn, was admitted to the Christchu/rdh Hospital on Saturday morning, and. died in. the institution.'He was knocked down by a train from Ashburton, and the base of his skiill was fractured. The deceased was p butcher at Islington. He was addicted to drink, and a flask of whisky fell from his pocket when he was picked up. He had cancer on the brain, and the doctor stated' that had he not been killed he must have dsfd in a few weeks.
