THE MOUNTED RIFLES.
Tie Masterton Mounted .Rifles have been .sacrificed to the exigencies of the new-fangled defence scheme. It seems strange that a well-equipped, enthusiastic corps of disciplined horsemen ehould be made subordinate to a country corps and practioally lose its identity. But -so it is. There may be isatisfaction in the reflection that corps like the Alexandra Cavalry of Wanganui have met a similar fate, it seems remarkable, however, that an important district like the Wairarapa should be without a regiment of its own, and be compelled to submit .to the indignity of having a portion of a battalion attached to headquarters at Eketahuna.
