COUNTRY TELEPHONES.
The subject of country telephones is one that has a peculiar interest for settlers in the way-backs. In the last session of Parliament the Government pretended a desire to be of assistance to those whoso good or bad fortune it is to reside away from civilisation, and book fiends, and canvassers for subscriptions, and doctors. It went so far as to place a sum of money upon the Estimates to relieve those whose circumstances would not permit their being attached to the "Are you there?" apparatus. This, however, was like a drop in the ocean. Nobody seems to have derived any special benefit from it. The local 'branch of the Farmers' Union is taking'the matter ju hand, and if it shouts often enough, and loud enough, it will be,heard; ,
