Mr J. Sheridan, who polled 1294 rotes in the contest for the Mayoralty of Gisborne, against 1591 recorded for the retiririg Mayor, is well-known in Masterton. and various parts of the Wairarapa. He is a son of the late Under Secretary of the Native Department. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Railways and Acting-Minister for Finance, left Wellington for the South last night. On Thursday evening he will be entertained by his Committee at Dunedin, when he will probably make a statement concerning the finances of the Dominion. Th© funeral of the lato Mrs C. .A Pownall, which took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon, was very largely attended. Every legal firm in town was represented. as were also the nublic offices and business houses. The coffin was covered with handsome wreaths. The ceremony at the grawpide. was performed by the Rev. Raine.

Mr S. Inder, Postmaster, of Masterton. has Returned, to his duties, much benefited by his three weeks' holiday at the seaside. Tb.9 grocery managers of the W.F.C.A. met nt the Masterton Board Room last Friday and presented Mr S. Keedwell (manager of the Association's Greytown branch) with a travelling bag and a shaving set. Mr Keedwell, who is on six months' lexxve, i c v making a tour'of. the Old Country for health and recreation. The presentation was made bv the managing director, Mr M. Caselberg, who heartily wished Mr Keedwell a pleasant voyage and a safe return.
