THE LATE MR HOLMES.

SKETCH OF HIS CAREER.

The late Mr Harry H, Holmes, of ■ Maiah'w;, whose death .was annoinc ed in the Age of Friday morning. Mu* sixtyrsix years of age. Ti« was a native'of Essex, England, and was the son of a solicitor. He came to New Zealand about forty years ago, and for a time wqs in charge of thg late Mr Pharazyn's estate on the East Coast. Subsequently he came to Master-ton, and with his brother, John (who is at present in England) took up the well-known Matahiwi estate, which was then a standing forest. The deceased, who had a charming personality, was highly respected by all with whom he came into contact. He was an ardent Bport, and took a keen delight in shooting. He' was also, at the time of his death, a Director of the Wellington Meat Esport Company, and.a Director of the Masterton Cooperative Dairy Company. Although of a somewhat retiring di&position, he had taken some part in local polities, and in 1889-90 represented tat' Masterton. Riding on the Wairarapa North County Council. The deceased was a highly successful sheepfarmer, and his property is regarded as one of the best in the districtHe leaves a widow (a daughter of the late Hon. Walter Johnston), a son, and two daughters. ; The }rema.ins, df the deceased were •brought to Masterton from the Lower Valley last evening, and taken to the residence of Mr W, H. Beetham. .

The remains of the late. Mr Holmes will be interred in the Masterton cemetery to-morrow afternoon, leaving.the residence of Mr W. H. Beetham at 1.30 p.m.
