A new York cable announces the death of Mr T. L. Johnson, a former Mayor of Cleveland.

Mr William Harvey has Been elected chairman of the Whakataki branch of the Farmers' Union.

A private cable message has been received stating that Mr Nation and family, of Mangamahoe, have reached the Old Country in good health.

We understand that Mr Humphrey Q'Leary, an old and respected business man of Masterton, intends offering himiself as a candidate for a seat on the Borough Council.

Mr W. H. Millward has been appointed ohairman of directors of the Gear Meat Company in succession to the late Mr James Gear. The consequent vacancy on the board of directors will not be filled.

It is definitely arranged that General R. Baden-Powell will commence his lecturing tour in 1912.

The Hon. R. McKenzie leaves Masterton for Wellington this morning.

Mr R. Ik Rosa, M.P., accompanied the Hon. R. McKenzie on his crosscountry trip from. Pongaroa to Masterton. Mr Ross returns to Woodville to-day.

Mr G. A. Donovan, a well-known and popular young settler of Kopuaranga, is leaving at an early date for Gisborne. He is to be entertained at a social on the 20th inst, and presented with an illuminated address.

Mr W. Bridge, who is well-known throughout the Wairarapa, has been appointed Organising Secretary of the Wairarapa Liberal League. He has commenced his duties, and will visit all parts of the electorate.

'Messrs D. K. Logan and C. C. Boss, who have been on a visit to Queensland, returned to Wellington by the Marama yesterday morning. Mr Ross arrived in Masterton last evening.

A pretty wedding was oelebrated at St. David's Church, Woodville, yesterday morning, when Miss Edith Agnes Mann, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Mann, of Oxford Farm, Woodville, was married to Mr Ernest Osborne Lovell (of Mangatainoka), fifth son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Lovell, of Blenheim.

Messrs J. and N. Tait, of Australia, have engaged Mr Ben Davies, the famous Welsh tenor, and Miss Esta d'Argo for an Australian' tour, commencing at Sydney in September next.

Mr Ernest Short, of Parorangi, is to be asked to accept nomination for the position of President of the Romney Marsh Sheep-breeders' Association, which is rendered vacant by the lamented death of Mr Geo. Wheeler.

The death is reported at the Pahiatua Hospita) of Mr Emil Voss, o£ Waimiro. The funeral took place at Pongaroa. Mrs Voss, who suffers from heart trouble, is now seriously indisposed, and has been ordered complete rest.

The death is recorded from heart failure at Stratford, of Mr Hugh Richmond, a very popular resident. The deoeased was well-known as a breeder of Jersey cattle.

Miss Williams, who has been in charge of the Master ton telephone exchange since its inception, has'been appointed permanent supervisor at the office. Her numerous friends will be pleased to hear that her claims for perferment have been recognised by the Department.

At the annual meeting of the Masterton Mounted Rifles last evening, a presentation was made to Sergt. H. Bannister, in the form of a case of brushes, as a mark of appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him in the capacity of eook.at #e recent camp. Capt. McKfllop, who made the presentation, stated that, Sergt. Bannister had proved very serviceable at a time when the squad was without a cook.
