Dr. W-. H. llosking, of Masterton, returned to Wellington yesterday by tlio Aorangi.
A vote of condolenco was passed at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council to the widow of the late Mr H. F. Lane, who was assistant Town Clerk.
Mrs F>. Flanagan, who will be the delegate of the Masterton Good Templars' Lodge at the annual Conference, leaves for Dunedin to-day.
Dr. Frengley, of the Health Department, was again a visitor to Masterton vesterday.
Inspector Hugo, Chief Fire Inspector of the Dominion, is at present on an official visit to Masterton.
The Rav. S. J. Serpell, who succeeds tho Rov. C. H. Olds in charge of tlio Masterton Methodist Circuit", arrived in Master ton by yesterday afternoon's train from Xapier. Mr Sorpell commences liis ministry in this town 011 Cood Friday, by holding a .service in tlio Church at 11 o'clock in the morning. He will lie tendered a welcome social on the following Thursday evening.
A London cable states that Sir Alfred Lyall died suddenly while a guest of Lord Tennyson at tlio Tsle of Wight. Tho deceased, who was 70 years of age. was a Privy Councillor, and Ford',s Lecturer in English history at tho Oxford University in 1007. Hp had done service in Tndia, and was a member of the Council of Secretary of State for India from 18RS to 1902.
Mr George Wilson, of Oram, has been chosen to contest tho Bay of Islands seat in the Opposition interest at tho coming election.
