THE FISHING INDUSTRY.

AT THE CHATHAM ISLANDS. ' The fishing indusi.:';," at the Chatham Islands seems to be going ahead by leaps and bounds, rays the correspondent of the Wairarapa Age. Of <eourse, on such a coast as this, and with such sudden changes of weather as are experienced here, the fishermen cannot work regularly, and sometimes do not get out for some days. When they do go, however, they make up for lost time. One hears of individuals making three and four pounds a day, e> en more. The fact is that the blue cod are here in enormous quantities, and they catch three or four fish at every cast of the line, for it is all line fishing. Only blucod arc wanted by the Company; if they would take hapuka (groper) they could fill up their steamer in two or three clays. The Nora Niven is expected again in a day or two. It is less than a month since she was here and took away 27 tons of blue cod. Everybody ihat cafi do so is out fishing, so that farm labourers are very scare: 1 , or very dear. Those that cannot manage a boat well can get plenty to do cleaning cod. Sometimes the fish are being brought in in such quantities by the fishermen that the cleaners cannot keep lip, ;nid the manager has to stop the ft.- hi kg till th.- glut of fish is removed.
