The underground drainage work is making good progress, and 1198 premises have been connected with complete sections j of it. The Council allows up to £lO J in each case, and these payments will absorb £241,000. In the old borough the next leading work the J new Council must consider is the proI vision of trams, and the Mayor 1 } thought a good svstem could be had for £50,000.

DISEASE INFECTED POTATOES.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. To-day Mi- Paletliorpe, representing the Orchards, Gardens and Apiaries Division of the Agricultural Department, visited New Plymouth, and made arrangements for the destruction of large consignments of grub infested potatoes (from the South Island. It is probable that they will be taken well out to sea by a dredge, and dumped overboard. Already large quantities have been buried and covered with lime at Inglewood to prevent the spread of the infection.
