A COSTLY ELECTION.
SOME BRIEF CRITICISMS. The clerk to the Pahiatua County Council reported to the Council the other day (says the Herald) that the Returning Officer at Masterton had* applied to him for 70 copies of last year's roll. , He had also been sop--phed. with particulars of 20 polling places, and it was intended' to pay two guineas to the various, deputies. "Simply ridiculous,'"' remarked ai councillor. "Who pays for it?" asked I .another;. .The Harbour Board does," replied the clerk. "I suppose they'll be charging a« extra shilling a bale on our said, Or Piper, who further expressed! ! the opinion that the' election ©£ representatives to the Harbour Board could just as well, have been carried out by the local bodies amongst themselves. Cr Hodigms ; "I bet one-tenth of the ratepayers won't go to the poll."
