NATIVE LARDS.
THE AREA AVAILABLE. Millions of acres of Native lands, said the Hon. D. Buddo, in a< speech at Kaiapoi, were alleged to be locked up by the actions of the Government, but the statement was far wide of the facts. The area of Native land settled during the past year had been 277,507 acres, which had passed into the occupation of Europeans or Natives who had taken it up A further area of 106,238 acres ' was being prepared for settlement, and the Crown had purchased during the past year another .100,000 acres. Of the 0,337,000 acres of Native land, .after deducting lands leased direct to Maoris, or in other ways, there remained a balance of 2,400,000 acres.
