ILLICIT TRADE IN RIFLES.
PATROLIJiNG SQUADRON REINFORCED. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) CALCUTTA, April 9. Admiral Slade's force, one thousand strong, has sailed for the Persian Gulf for a secret destination. Ships ofth e East Indies Squadron have 'been patrolling the waters at the entrance of the Persian Gulf at intervals for more than a year, to prevent the illicit trade of rifles on the north-west frontier of India. Many captures have been made, sometimes after severo conflicts. On November 2nd, a landing party from H.M.S. Porcupine was attacked by African gun-runners at Bris, more than 400 miles from Tiingah. and two British officers wore wounded. Another encounter was recorded in December last at Di'bai, which is near Lingah. _ It resulted in the loss of four British seamen killed, one missing, and nine wounded.
