A sum of £7l was subscribed in the room at the meeting of the Masterion A. and P. Association on Saturday, in aid of the fund to send Home a. representative of the producers to investigate the frozen meat trade.
MnSterton stalkers state that stags are not nearly as numerous in the Wairarapa this year as in former years. Very few good heads have so far been obtained.
A cricket match wus played on the Masterton Park Oval on Saturday between teams representing the Congregational and Knox Churches, and resulted in a, draw. The Congregational team batted first, compiling Bfi runs for tho innings, of which Wnugh accounted for 29 and G. Joy 25. Pryor was the best bowler, taking 3 wickets for 6 runs. Knox's first innings totalled 132. of which It. McKenzie was top scorer with 32. Waugh took f> wickets for 50 and C. Hendry 3 for 1!). Tn their second innings the Congregational team succeeded in hitting up VI4, Waugh again being top-scorer with 70. Thompson took 3 for 61 and Pryor 4 for 42. Requiring 68 runs to win, Knox commenced their second innings, and had lost' one wicket for 43 when the failing light compelled the drawing of stumps.

A Masterton lady, who has a small stream running through her property, states that she has lost no fewer than seventeen ducklings this last season through tho voracity of eels. Almost cverv loss was traced directly to this cause. The unsuspecting bird would bo seized either by a foot or the beak and dragged under the water. Numbers of the unfortunate victims which managed to reach land again would bo minus either a foot or a portion of the beak.
The two men who came to Masterton from the Forty-Mile Bush on Friday night with injured limbs were commercial travellers belonging to Wellington. They were driving in a gig in tho Rakanui district when the breeching broke and they were thrown out. One sustained a fractured collarbone and an injury to his ribs, while tho other escaped with bruises. They left for Wellington on Saturday.
Dr. Chesson, District Health Officer, paid a visit to Eketahuna last week, and suggested that a house to house inspection of the borough be made. According to the Express, he is satisfied that the typhoid fever eases emanated it'om an outside source.
The Alfredton correspondent of the Express writes: —"Excitement runs high in tho Ihurana Valley since _ it has been discovered that coal exists there, strong indications having been discovered by experts on Mr Judd's property. A bore is to be driven shortly, when it will bo discovered whether coal exists there in payable quality and quantity."
The bush on the Masterton A. and T. Association's showgrounds at Solway lias been practically fenced in, and the Chairman of the Ground Committqo (Mr W. .J. Welch) reported at Saturday's meeting that a tree-plant-ing scheme could not with safety bo undertaken.
A very fine framed group of the Masterton Fire Board and Tire Brigade is at present on view in the window of the photographic establishment of Mr D. Wilton. The picture also contains photographs of the old and new fire stations, and lias been appropriately illuminated and engrossed by Messrs J. Smith and Sons.' 1 The length of service of each fireman is shown, and it is interesting to note that the Secretary (Mr E. Pragnell) has a service of twenty-four years, whilst Foreman Braggins has seen twenty years' duty, and Superintendent Jenkins fifteen.
At h meeting of members of the Producers' Association, at J)annevirke 011 Friday, it was decided tl.at it was desirable to send a representative to the Old Country to arrange'for the better handling of frozen meat in London. Mr W. 1). Lysnar was authorised to make the final arrangements for despatching a'representative, and it is understood that Mr *.T. Shelton, of Gisbornc, will be selected for the position.
Adverse comment is being made upon the fact that Ministers, whenever they travel, find it expedient to include their party organiser. "It looks." said one who was present at a recent function, "as if every trip is made with an express political object in view, r.amely, to keep themselves in power, and prepare for the forthcoming general election."

A very convincing proof of the value of cow-testing was given by a sneaker at a function at Stratford. Tn hir. oninion a lot of the cows now in use should be shot and buried. They were "robbers." He instanced the case of a maii who had been giving the milk of two or three of his cows to calves because he felt the milk was inferior, but testing had proved that the milk from these particular animals was the best he was obtaining.
Arthur Ernest Ede, whom , Mr W iddowson. S.M.. described as a man absolutely insensible of liis duties to :> wife and children as long as he could get drink and tobacco, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment at Dunedin the other day for failure to obey a maintenance order.
The Wairarapa branch of the Teachers' Institute held a, general meeting on Saturday morning. There was n fair attendance of members, the President. Mr C. N. Haslam, occupying the chair. The business of the meeting was to receive the report, of the delegates who attended the late Institute Conference held at Hokitika. The two delegates (Messrs Foss and Burns) were in attendance, and between them gave an interesting account of the business transacted by the delegates in council. The Masterton Borough Council will hold a committee-meeting to-mor-row night. A Timaru telegram states that tho potato grub has made i's appearance in several localities in that district. The last meeting of the Masterton School Committee, as at present constituted, will bo held on Thursday evening.
It has been suggested that, as the Hon. E. McKenzie is a Caledonian, he should be entertained by the W airarapa Caledonian Society on the occasion of his visit to Masterton this week.

Both service- in the Congregational Church in Ma-sterton yesterday were very well attended, when the pastor, the' Rev. A. Hodge, occupied the pulpit. The text 011 which ]SIr Hodge based his morning address was Romans 6: 14, "For sin shall not have dominion over you; for you are not under the law. but under grace." In the evening Mr Hodge preached a very eloquent and helpful sermon on "The Value of Corporate Worship," taking: his text from the words found in Psalm 73 : 16-17. "When T thought to know this it was too painful for me. until T went into the sanctuary of God, then understood I."
