FRENCH MAIL STEAMERS.

GIVING UP AUSTRALIAN TRADE

(Per United Press Association.)

(Received April 5, 10.16 a.m.)

SYDNEY, April 4. There is a possibility of the - French line of Mail steamers ceasing to call at Australian ports. There is a movement afoot both in France and New Caledonia to have the line diverted so as to pass through East India to New Caledonia, the relations with Australia' being maintained by means of a branch line connecting Noumea and Sydney. French files declare that every attempt of the Company to compete with the great English Companies has proved useless, and they argue that the new route will be more profitable, and also shorten the voyage between Marseilles and Noumea.
