SIR JOSEPH WARD.
INTERVIEWED AT VANCOUVER. (Per United Press Association.) (Received April 5, 9.9 a.m.) . OTTAWA, April 4. Sir Joseph Ward, interviewed at Vancouver, refused to express an opinion on the subject of the reciprocity treaty between the United States and Canada, stating that he did not desire to criticise the policy of other Dominions. He hoped that a great expansion of trade would take place between Canada and New, Zealand. The new service was a great advantage in this direction. He advocated Imperial reciprocity, and urged the younger nations within the Empire to unite for defence purposes. The British fleet, in view of European developments, was needed nearer home, and the overseas Dominions consequently ought to he able to undertake their own defence. Sir Joseph criticised Canada's immigration policy, as regards the admission of non-Britislr coloured races, and he contrasted New Zealand's aim to keep the country British and not admit Orientals.
