AN INTERESTING PAPEH

(Per United Press Association.) (Received April 5, 11.54 a.m.) LONDON, April 4. Lord Denman, Sir John Fuller, Sir George Reid, Major-General Hut ton, Sir Francis Hopwood, and. Sir Ernest Shackleton were amongst those present at the reading of a paper by Captain Collins, dealing with Australian development. Lord Denman expressed his pleasure a + / going to Australia, and said he was conscious of the disadvantages of following his experienced predecessor, but he relied on the proverbial corliality of Australians. Sir Edward Hutton, in moving a vote of thanks to Captain Collins, said that Australia had reason to be proud of its military past. The late Mr Dalley had pioneered the co-oper-ative system of Empire.defence when he sent tlie Australian contingent to the Soudan. Sir Edward Hutton also eulogised compulsory service. Sir Ernest Shackleton appealed for assistance for Professor Mawson's Australian Antarctic expedition.
