CONSTRUCTION OF THE FLEET.
TO BE UNDERTAKEN LOCALLY

SYDNEY, March 31. On the strength of the- report of the Superintendent of Cockatoo Dock, Mr Holnian, Acting-Premier, has informed the- Federal Government that the New South Wales Government is prepared to undertake the building of the new warships. The time for the completion of a second-class cruiser and three destroyers is fixed at 26 months from the time the plans are lodged. The -.terms offered are 8 per cent upon the actual outlay incurred.
The New South Wales Government, in the performance of the work, will be taking Admiral Henderson's estimates as a guide. The cost of- the cruisers will be about £450,000, ' and of the destroyers £90,000 each.
