Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 1911. THE WORLD'S WHEAT SUPPLY.
The annual statement of Messrs Bathgate and Co.,'of Bristol, as to the world's wheat crop for 1910-11, arid the quantities from the exporting countries, was recently published. In a final estimate, the product iof the crop in various countries is given in -millions of quarters:— U.S.A., 87; Canada, 15; River Plate and Chili, 19J-; Australasia, 10; Russian Empire, 84; United Kingdom, 6-J; France, 32; Austro-Hun-gary, 33; Italy, 18; India (forecast) 35-J-; Balkans, 19£; Germany, 17J; rest of Europe, 29; total, 406| millions. It is estimated that the requirements for the season of ail importing countries, both European and ex-European, will not be less than 75 million quarters, but, as the following statement shows, the exportable surplus of the several countries falls short of the requirements : Exportable Surplus 1910-11 ' •'•:■■■-, Qrs. ■ UtS.A. and Canada 15,000,000; River Plate 10,000,000 Australasia 5,750,000 Russia 27,000,000 Balkans 11,000,000 India 4,000,000 Sundry exporters 1,250,000 Total 74,000,000
Balance to Ship before Aug. 1, 1911 Qrs. U.S.A. and Canada 7,470,000 River Plate 7,300,000 Australasia 3,900,000 Russia 12,550,000 Balkans 3,500,000 India 1,650,000 Sundry Exporters 630,000 Total 37,000,000 . Messrs Bathgate and Co., discussing the prospective shortage, point out that "estimates of the kind are based on conditions as they appear to-day, and all such estimates, however complete one's knowledge and however searching one's perspicacity, may always be modified by two factors. These are that while a substantial rise in price may call out additional supplies of wheat from various quarters, a considerable advance will ultimately curtail consumption in importing countries. The other element of modification is the fact that..there, is a point; at whicli a reduction in price at once reduces the quantity which certain countries are willing to export."
