ESSEX STREET LIGHTING.
DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A. deputation of Esses Street residents, consisting of Messrs A. E. Winzenberg, W- H- L. Galwey, A. Donald,,and R. J. Young, waited on: the Masterton 'Borough Council at its meeting last night, in support of a letter from Mr Wiuzenberg, on 1 behalf of the Residents of the street in question, asking for better lighting. -.' :
Mr Winzenberg stated that there was onJy one tnroiighout the whole length of the street. There were no houses in the lower -'part, and on occasions one walking along the street could scarcely see the way. Bad 'characters v>ere known to. frequent the street, and it was very .uncomfortable lor ladies to pass* along the street ■■after, dark. One; light was required at the culvert just above the Geutleriien's Club; (where; there was a .telegraph post; •which'.'could be used), and one at the top of the street. ... 'ln Cob; Street, which was the same length; as Essex Street, there were good lamps. ( The Mayor said that the matter had already been considered once, and it had been found that, owing to the faci that there was no main in the street, better lighting would involve an expenditure of £SO. The laying of the main would not bring in any revenue, and Viere would be a continual expense for the lighting. .
Cr Morris moved that the Mayor, Cr Ewington; and the mover Be appointed a committee to confer with the Gas Manager, and report. The motion was seconded by Cr Elliott and carried.
